DIY Cinnamon Buns In Honor of National Dog Day

Seeing as how today, August 26th, is National Dog Day – (why don’t they make it a holiday and let us take a day off to enjoy with our pets?!) – you should go the extra mile to treat your pet as the king or queen he/she really is. And what better way to show your undying love for your dog than with an edible treat?

After a well-deserved pampering, make the day extra special for your pup by making some delicious homemade cinnamon buns. These particular ones are not only exquisitely mouthwatering, but they are also made out of whole wheat flour making them healthy for your best friend. They are also made with canola oil, which contains both healthy Omega 3 fatty acids as well as polyunsaturated fats, ensuring that your dog enjoys a wholesome treat on such a special day.

For the Buns:
1/2 cup of water or milk (if your dog is lactose intolerant, go with water)
1 large egg
2 tbsp of honey
2 cups of whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp. of salt
1/4 cup of canola oil
1 tsp. of baking powder
1 tsp. of cinnamon
1/4 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

For the Cream Cheese Drizzle:
1-2 tbsp. of milk or water
1/4 cup of light, fat-free cream cheese

For the Buns:
1) Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
2) Mix the flour, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl.
3) In a separate bowl, combine stir the egg, water/milk, and oil together. Add to the dry ingredients and keep stirring until well combined.
4) Lightly flour a surface and roll the dough to approximately 8×4 in. rectangle. Drizzle the surface with the honey, nuts, and cinnamon.
5) Starting from one of the edges, begin rolling the dough and pinch the edges as if to seal them when you are done rolling.
6) Using a knife or dental floss, slice the rolled dough into half an inch pieces, placing all of the already cut pieces in a nonstick cookie sheet.
7) Bake for about 15 mins. or until slightly golden.

For the Cream Cheese Drizzle:
1) Mix the light cream cheese with your preference of milk or water.
2) Place the mixture in a Ziplock bag and cut a small edge off of the sealed bag in order to make it easier to spread.

Lastly, wait until the baked cinnamon buns have cooled down completely before drizzling the cream cheese frosting on top. The cinnamon buns are now ready to enjoy as they are, or could even be refrigerated for a while to make them a cold treat. Give one to your dog and test your cooking skills by looking at his reaction!
